Recovery House Owners are they the new Slum Lords, are they Helping or Exploiting ?

Recovery House Owners are they the new Slum Lords, are they Helping or Exploiting ?

Recovery Houses, is it all about the MONEY? How to choose the right one!

Recovery houses also known as sober living homes, sober living facilities or halfway houses. These homes are meant to be a transition between in-patient drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers, and integrating addicts/alcoholics back into society. For most addicts/alcoholics coming out of treatment, this may be the only option they have, because they tend to "burn all of their bridges" and are cannot return home because of their past behaviors.

The question is, are recovery houses helping or keeping addicts/alcoholics stuck. Overpriced weekly rent, inhabitable living environments, or a lack of resources being offered.  For most owners of recovery houses, this is a business, and about profitable returns.  A business that is not legislated, a business with no set standards.

Early recovery is an exciting but a very uncertain time, for the recovering addict/alcoholic.  How much can an addict/alcoholic be expected to pay? They may be fresh off the streets, straight out of jail with a criminal history, or without the education or training they need to survive and thrive. Trying to recover from their addiction, is a full-time job, especially in the early stages. There are some recovery houses that offer a “grace period”, which helps the person look for employment, but more times than not, the location of available houses are limited with transportation options and in bad neighborhood.

Each house has different rules and restrictions, curfews, rent amounts, and how many residents will reside in the house. Many times there are bunk beds in every room, some houses will include meals, but most are very limited on resources. Ensuring maximum profitability for the owner.

Many of the recovery houses turn into "flop houses". They tend be located in poor, drug and crime infested areas. Where cheap real estate is available. These owners are only interested in the bottom line, instead of the tenants who are trusting them to provide at least a minimal amount of structure, support, and stability.

The drug epidemic today is at an all-time high, and people are dying every single day.  They feel hopeless, lost and alone, but have made a life changing decision, TO GET CLEAN. Recovery from drugs and alcohol is a long, difficult process, and having a safe and supportive environment is a fundamental necessity. Where does it start.?

Recovery can still be achieved within the walls of any recovery house with a combined effort from the owner, management, and residents. The keystone of any recovery-based program is being in service to one another, one addict/alcoholic helping another. Working together, these recovery houses can be beneficial, and help the addicted build up their self-esteem and confidence levels, allowing them to become productive members of society. Addicts and alcoholics are some of the strongest and most resourceful people in the world, and absolutely CAN recover, if given the proper chances and opportunities.

This cannot be about profit, this needs to be about PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE.
